Campo de Ourique is an elegant neighborhood with a plan and geometrical layout, buildings from the early twentieth century, street trading, restaurants and bakeries. It was here, at Rua Coelho da Rocha, that Fernando Pessoa lived the last 15 years of his life. At Casa Fernando Pessoa are the poet’s personal belongings, such as his typewriter and his glasses, as well as his library. It is also here that is located the Cemitério dos Prazeres, where illustrious painters, writers and singers are buried. Heading down towards Estrela, the Basílica, in baroque style, stands on the hill. A little further on, Rua de São Bento, 193, is the house where Amália Rodrigues, the greatest Portuguese fadista (fado singer) of all time lived for half a century. A piano and a Portuguese guitar, dresses, shoes and jewelry are exposed in this house that still seems to be inhabited.
